  5. Installing an Intel EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100+ PCI adapter in
  6. a PCI slot
  7. ============================================================

  9. 1  With power off, put the adapter in the computer.
  10.  
  11. 2  Start the computer. In most cases, the PCI computer will
  12.    automatically configure the adapter. If this doesn't
  13.    happen, you may have to configure the computer to work
  14.    with the adapter. See the next section for details.
  15.

  17. If you have problems
  18. ====================
  19.  
  20. Intel has found that some PCI computers require additional
  21. configuration to install a PCI adapter. Follow these steps
  22. to complete the installation:
  23.  
  24. 1  Make sure you have the latest BIOS version for your
  25.    computer.
  26.  
  27. 2  Make sure the BIOS is set up correctly.
  28.  
  29. The following sections describe these steps in detail.

  32. Make sure you have the latest BIOS version
  33. ------------------------------------------

  35. Contact your computer's manufacturer to make sure you're
  36. using the latest BIOS.

  39. BIOS setup
  40. ----------
  41.  
  42. In some PCI computers, you may need to enable the PCI slot
  43. using the BIOS Setup program. This is especially common in
  44. PCI computers with a Phoenix BIOS.
  45.  
  46. After installing the adapter, turn on the computer and enter
  47. the Setup program during system initialization (usually by
  48. pressing F1, F2, or Ctrl-Alt-S). The key you press is
  49. usually shown on the screen.

  51. Once in Setup, find the entry for PCI slots.  Set these
  52. parameters:
  53.    
  54.    PCI Slot#:     Slot where the adapter is installed (1-3)
  55.    
  56.    Master:        ENABLED
  57.    
  58.    Slave:         ENABLED
  59.    
  60.    Latency Timer: 40
  61.    
  62.    Interrupt:     Choose an IRQ.
  63.    
  64.    Edge-level:    Level
  65.  
  66. The exact wording of the parameters varies with different
  67. computers.
  68.  
  69. Save the changes, exit Setup, and continue with the
  70. installation.

  73. Updating the Compaq DeskPRO XL BIOS
  74. ===================================
  75.  
  76. There are two primary steps:
  77.  
  78. 1  Upgrade the Compaq system BIOS to v2.22E (available from
  79.    Compaq).
  80.    
  81.    In general, follow the instructions on page 7-12 (Using
  82.    the Compaq EISA Configuration Utility) in the Compaq
  83.    "Beyond Setup for the Deskpro XL." This includes: Power
  84.    off, Set switch 6 to ON, Power on, Run EISA Config
  85.    Utility to reconfigure, select computer setup icon,
  86.    select OK to restart, Press F10 with cursor in upper
  87.    right of screen, select System Configuration, wait while
  88.    computer reconfigures, enter to complete, MAKE SURE to
  89.    set S6 back to OFF position before powering    off (this
  90.    disables the erase option).

  92. 2  Upgrade the Compaq Rompaq, and follow the instructions
  93.    below.
  94.    
  95.    The Compaq BBS Rompaq upgrade for the DeskPro/XL
  96.    (SP1022.zip) works with our EtherExpress PRO/100B or
  97.    PRO/10+ PCI LAN adapters.
  98.    
  99.    In general, follow the instructions from Compaq, which
  100.    include setting switch S1 to On for update.  (S1 On -
  101.    disabled:  Flash ROM can be updated. S1 OFF - enabled:
  102.    Prevents Flash ROM updates. Off is the default.)
  103.    
  104.    To correctly enable the card after this BIOS is
  105.    installed:
  106.    
  107.    1  On restart, press F10 to go into the configuration
  108.       utility when the blinking cursor moves to the right
  109.       corner.
  110.    
  111.    2  The COMPAQ configuration screen should come up.  The
  112.       BIOS rev. shown here must be 2.22E (or later).
  113.    
  114.    3  Press return to get initial configuration choices.
  115.    
  116.    4  Press CTRL-A. If a message saying 'Advanced Features
  117.       Enabled' does not appear, you cannot enable the Intel
  118.       adapter.
  119.    
  120.    5  Press return to confirm, and then choose Configure
  121.       system.
  122.    
  123.    6  After the configuration runs, choose View, Edit
  124.       Details.
  125.    
  126.    7  Under the Advanced Features section, look for PCI
  127.       Master Enable.  The default is disabled. Change the
  128.       setting to enabled.
  129.    
  130.    8  Further down, in Slot X, you should see PCI Ethernet
  131.       Controller.  Move the cursor to enabled, and press F6
  132.       to check the settings.  Typically, the Intel adapter
  133.       will be INT 2(9). Change this to INT 10.

  135.    9  Move down to Embedded PCI Ethernet Controller. The
  136.       default is enabled. Change the setting to disabled.

  138.    10 Save settings and exit.
